2018 Accomplishments

Our members are still winning awards, getting published, and being otherwise brilliant:

  • Many of our members were published in ‘Life’ —The Kensington & Norwood Writers’ Group’s Journal, available from Dillons Bookshop Norwood.
  • Cary had her second chap-book, ‘Ultrasound in B flat’ published by Garron Books, and her poems ‘Under the Lemon Tree’ and ‘Train to Mandalay’ received Highly Commended and Commended awards (respectively) at the Salisbury Writers Festival.
  • Darrell had poems published in: The Tea Tree Gully Poetry 2017 Festival, Selected Poems; Back Beat (SA Jazz Archives); the Tamba Literary Magazine; Mozzie poetry journal; Positive Words magazine; ‘Poetry Matters’ Literary Journal; and the Positive Words Literary Magazine.
  • Edna had three poems published in the Tea Tree Gully Poetry Festival Anthology 2017.
  • Ian published his books of short stories, ‘Where the Hell is Heaven?’, ‘On the Road to Somewhere Else’, and ‘Book End’, with Ginninderra Press, as well as his 3rd poetry chap book ‘On the Road to Somewhere’. He also had a poem published in Ginninderra Press’s 10th year Anniversary Anthology.
  • Gordon had four poems published in the Tea Tree Gully 2017 North Eastern Writers Anthology; and ‘A Mug’s Game’ was published in the ‘Malicious Mysteries’ magazine, put out by Stringybark Press.
  • Koula had her novel, ‘The Eagle of Spinalonga’, awarded ‘Book of the Day’ by Amazon, and it reached number one in two categories, Historical Fiction and Thriller Suspense.
  • Margaret had two poems, ‘Autumn Light’ and ‘Clicktivism’, published in the Friendly Street anthology.
  • Sam won the Richell prize for emerging writers.
  • Sara had her poems, ‘Lovers’ and ‘Ephemeral’ published in ‘Leaves of Ink’; her haibun, ‘R (Ruby) Remembers’ in a ‘Me-too’ publication in the United States; her poems, ‘Facts are Facts’ and ‘With Heart’ published in the Friendly Street anthology.
  • Stephanie had her poem ‘I Remember’ published in Tea Tree Gully Poetry 2017 Festival, Selected Poems. She also participated in a short film for transgender day of visibility, and in another film called ‘Unboxed’, which was aired on ABC television, and won the award for ‘Best Documentary or Educational Series’ at the International Academy of Web Television Awards – held recently in Los Angeles.
  • Steve had an environmentally-themed article published in the journal of the Friends of Scott Creek CP, ‘Bandicoot Tails’.IMG_4010

On What it Takes to be a Writer …

 It brought me to an abiding, powerful understanding of the way we human beings—once we dig beneath our protective shells—are more similar than different. The same worries keep us up at night. The same fears and insecurities drive us.

In a workshop, I was discussing some manuscript pages of one of my students—a lovely writer who has been working on a memoir for the past ten years—and I wasn’t telling her what she wanted to hear.  What she wanted to hear was, of course, what we all want to hear, which is: this is magnificent, and your work here is done. After all, she had been working on the manuscript for ten years.  She had poured everything she had into it.  But her work wasn’t done. And as we began to talk about it, she told us she was trying not to cry.

And what I said in response was perhaps not the most teacherly thing I have ever said: I cry every day.
